Personal Leave of Absence

A personal leave of absence is approved time away from work for a reason that may not fall under another specific leave policy or legal entitlement.

Employers may offer personal leave for situations that do not qualify for vacation, sick leave, FMLA, or another protected leave. The policy should explain eligibility, how to request leave, whether the time is paid or unpaid, how benefits are handled, and expectations for returning to work. Employers should also check whether another leave or accommodation law applies before treating an absence as purely personal.
