Work Authorization

Work authorization is legal permission for a person to work in a particular country. In the United States, employers verify identity and employment authorization through the Form I-9 process.

U.S. employers must complete Form I-9 for employees hired for employment and follow rules about which documents may be accepted. Employers should not request specific documents or treat workers differently based on citizenship or immigration status when the law does not permit it. Some employees may also have employment authorization documents with expiration or reverification requirements.
